The Fairy Must Fly (A Magical short Story by Judy)

The Fairy Must Fly

Lunar the home of Fairies, since the Time before Time, as close as the next room, and as far away as the end of the universe.

The King and Queen had a problem, called Rosebud, their daughter. Oh! They loved her so much, but if there was trouble she would find it. She would try anything, she loved to play, often missing her classes, especially flying, because Rosebud had a big fear, she hated heights and was very scared of flying.

The King and Queen, had tried everything, but who had ever heard of a fairy who could not fly. To be a fairy you had to fly.

It was a hot summer’s day, a great day for young fairies to get used to flying, a point made by Strong Oak and Young Spring, Rosebud’s mum and dad, but with little or no result. Strong Oak even tried “The Princess who cannot fly” routine, with no results. The outside world was calling her, it was just the flying part, it missed out on. Rosebud knew her friend Green Ivy would be waiting for her.

As soon as she could, which meant as soon as her mum and dad, turned to the work of the day, Rosebud was off to the village square. There by the old tree was Green Ivy, she smiled a question, "What kept You?!?"

Rosebud looked up at the sky and then back at the palace. Green Ivy nodded with a smile, and added "come on!" They headed out of town, Rosebud running and Green Ivy flying ahead, then waiting for her friend to catch up. Green Ivy came to rest on a small hill, suddenly the ground gave way, and with a shout of alarm Green Ivy vanished.

Rosebud looked up expecting to see her friend, but nothing. First she thought Green Ivy was playing a game. She shouted her name, nothing.

Rosebud ran to where she last saw her friend shouting out for her, she suddenly felt the ground give way and jumped back. Again shouting her friend’s name, then there was a faint answer, "Down Here".

Rosebud looked into the hole, there at the bottom about 40 feet down lay Green Ivy, tears of pain running down her cheek.

"Can you fly", came from Rosebud,

"My leg", was the only answer.

"I must go and get help", shouted Rosebud.

"Hurry", the only answer.

Rosebud knew that the only help, or rather the nearest help was the Palace Guard! She started to run, till her lungs hurt. Then she wished she could fly. “Stop being a coward!” she said to herself. She ran till her legs hurt. Then suddenly she was not touching the ground any more. She looked down and the ground was getting further away, she was in the air, her wings carried her faster and faster towards the Palace.

She saw the guards ahead pointing at her, she tried to remember how to go down and land.

But all she did was stop her wings and she fell like a stone, in front of the sergeant of the guards.

Your Highness”, he gave her a salute with a grin, then held out his hand, adding “Well done, the King and Queen will be pleased, but the landing needs work!

Rosebud shouted that Green Ivy is hurt, and pointed back the way she had come. The sergeant got six Fairy Guards and with a little help Rosebud took to the air again. The guards went in front and on both sides with more bringing up the rear.

Rosebud started to shout instructions, but found they were not needed, soon the spot was in sight, and to Rosebud’s surprise there stood Green Ivy, with the King and Queen. They were all smiling. Rosebud’s second landing was a little better, (not much) but it seemed not to matter to the welcoming party.

Turning to the King and Queen, Rosebud said, “I’ve been had”. Smiling Green Ivy said “I think my acting was the best part”.

The Queen took her daughter’s hands in hers. "You needed to overcome your fear, and we knew your love for Green Ivy would do that if you thought she was in danger."

It was a smiling Royal party who returned to the Palace, and before long, Rosebud would fly everywhere even when she was supposed to walk.
